Poll: Over two-thirds of Americans don't support Iraq war

Residents run away from the scene following an explosion in Sadr City Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- American support for the war in Iraq remains low, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Wednesday.

Among those polled, there was widespread feelings that the conflict is going badly and that sending additional troops to the region won't make any difference.

Overall, 32 percent of Americans support the war while 66 percent oppose it, the poll indicates. Moreover, 69 percent believe the war is going badly while only 28 percent say it is going well. Twenty-eight percent of Americans call for an immediate withdrawal, 29 percent favor troops to be withdrawn by August of next year, and 41 percent say troops should stay in the country as long as needed to turn control over to the Iraqi government.

As the President prepares Wednesday to meet with congressional leaders about the Iraq war supplemental that includes a withdrawal deadline, 60 percent of Americans report they are more likely to side with the Democrats' plan, while only 37 percent say they would likely back the president's plan.

Meanwhile, if Bush vetoes the spending bill that calls for a withdrawal, nearly half (48 percent) of Americans believe Congress should submit another funding bill that includes a timetable for redeployment. Conversely, 37 percent believe Congress should submit a spending bill without a timetable and 13 percent think funding for the war should be cut off completely.

The poll, conducted on April 10-12, included interviews with 1,218 adult Americans and carries a margin of error of between 3 and 4.5 percentage points.
