MoveOn to air ad on McCain's 'Bomb Iran' joke
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The liberal political organization MoveOn.org announced Friday they will air an ad in Iowa and New Hampshire that draws attention to Sen. John McCain's recent "Bomb Iran" parody, a day after the Arizona Republican said people who are criticizing his comments need to "get a life."
The group is spending approximately $100,000 on the ad buy and will air the 30 second spot all next week on affiliates and some cable channels in the early voting states, MoveOn spokesman Alex Howe said. The ad reruns the presidential candidate's parody of the Beach Boys' song "Baraba Ann" (McCain substituted "Bomb Iran" for "Barbara Ann") at a South Carolina town-hall Wednesday night. An announcer then is heard saying, "John McCain? We can't afford another reckless president." A McCain campaign aide brushed off the ad. "It comes as no surprise that America's most liberal interest group would attack John McCain's belief that we cannot allow Iran to destroy Israel," the aide said. "After all, MoveOn.org posted ads comparing President Bush to Hitler during the last Presidential election." At a Las Vegas fundraiser Thursday night, McCain dismissed critics of his comments, saying, "I was talking to some of my old veterans friends. My response is, 'Lighten up and get a life.'" -- CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
