McCain misses fourth Iraq vote for presidential campaign
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Arizona Senator John McCain, a long time and loud proponent of sending more troops to Iraq, missed Thursday's Senate vote on the Iraq war funding bill. This is the fourth Iraq vote in three months that the Republican presidential contender has missed due to campaign events. He is currently campaigning in South Carolina after officially announcing his bid to run for president. “He is in South Carolina for the launch of his presidential campaign," Spokeswoman Eileen McMenamin said. "Everybody knows where he stands on this issue. He talks about it every day and his presence would not have changed the outcome of the vote anyway.” The bill passed by the Senate includes a provision for setting a timeline for withdrawing troops. President Bush has threatened to veto it, and McCain said he supports him. --CNN's Dana Bash and Lisa Goddard |
