House Republicans pledge to sustain Bush's Iraq veto threat

Boehner pledged to sustain Bush's Iraq veto.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Minority Leader John Boehner wants President Bush to know he and a 153 other House Republican's fully support his threat to veto the recently passed Iraq spending bill calling for a troop withdrawal to begin in March of 2008.

The Ohio Republican released a letter to the president Monday that pledges to sustain his veto of the measure. The 45-word letter, signed by 154 House Republicans, raises concern about the "extraneous and excessive non-security related funds contained within" the bill." (Read letter [PDF])

"This letter sends a strong message that Republicans will continue to fight for a clean troop funding bill, without tying funding for our generals and our troops to arbitrary restrictions or pork-barrel projects," Boehner said in a statement Monday. "American troops deserve a clean bill without extraneous and unnecessary spending and free of strings that undermine their mission."
