Debate? 'Send us some money'
WAGENER, South Carolina (CNN) -- There were no campaign signs. No talk and no interest in the 2008 race for the White House in this sleepy little town due west of the first Democratic presidential debate taking place in Orangeburg.
An hour before the debate, people stopped by a roadside gas station to fill up, pick up some small groceries or grab a quick soda on this hot and muggy night. "A debate," the cashier responded quizzically when asked what she thought about the Democratic forum taking place down the road. "Don't know anything about a debate. But y'all tell the president to send us some money." The stakes are high in the Democratic presidential primary and so far, outside the major cities there is no presence yet of the presidential campaign. -- CNN's Mark Preston and Sam Feist
