Conservatives call for Bush to fire Gonzales

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says that the U.S. attorneys were properly dismissed and that he never meant to deceive the American people.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A group of influential conservatives directly called on President Bush to fire embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Monday, the day before Gonzales is slated to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the U.S. attorney firings, CNN's partner Time.com reports.

The leading conservatives -- including former Reagan Justice office Bruce Fein, American Conservative Union Chairman David Keene, well-know GOP fundraiser Richard Viguerie, former GOP congressman Bob Barr, and Rutherford Institute head John Whitehead -- wrote a letter to addressed to both Bush and Gonzales, calling the attorney general a "unsuitable steward of the law."

Fein in particular has been an outspoken critic of Gonzales, calling for his resignation soon after the firings came into question.
