Burnett, MySpace to launch political reality show
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Reality TV guru Mark Burnett and the popular social networking site MySpace.com are teaming up to launch a political reality show that aims to find a candidate to run in the 2008 presidential election.
The show titled "Independent" will allow viewers to select their favorite candidate and will award the winner $1 million. But the winning candidate cannot keep the money -- he or she must use it to launch a campaign or donate it to a political organization or charity thats political in nature. Prospective candidates will submit videos through the MySpace website and the contestants chosen for the show will create MySpace profiles to showcase their political platforms. Burnett, the creator of several successful reality shows including "Survivor" and "The Apprentice," hopes the show gives young American's a chance to weigh in on the political process. "We're going to discover in a big way, what America really thinks, and bring to light the issues that are closest to those who now finally have a chance to be heard," he said in a news release announcing the show. "The largest number of eyeballs able to be reached at any one time is still network television. But clearly, the world's largest social networking community is found on MySpace and this huge, powerful group of young Americans will definitely generate strong opinions, and unquestionable influence." It is not yet clear what television network will air the show. -- CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
