Abortion politics
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling banning a specific abortion procedure Wednesday is giving hope to the pro-life movement and causing concern among abortion rights activists, CNN's Candy Crowley reports.
The decision backs a federal law banning a rarely used abortion procedure generally performed in the the middle-to-late second trimester. The legal sticking point was that the law lacked a "health exception" for a woman who might suffer serious medical complications, something the justices have said in the past is necessary when considering abortion restrictions. Six years ago, the high court rejected a similar ban, also a 5-4 decision. What Changed? First the White House, then the Supreme Court.
