Year of the 'smaller' Pig
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Citizens Against Government Waste targeted lawmakers so called "pork projects" Tuesday with the release of its 2007 Congressional Pig Book. CAGW said it identified 2,658 projects at a cost of $13.2 billion dollars, the lowest since 1999. CAGW said wasteful Congressional spending reached an all time high in 2006 at $29 billion. The group attributes the lowering in spending to the fact that only two of 11 appropriations bills were enacted in FY 2006 and a moratorium on all earmarks. Sen. John McCain attended the CAGW news conference and the Arizona senator said he thought the recent rise in earmarks attributed to Republican losses in 2006. "I think the Republican Party lost the last election, because of our failure to control spending, and the earmarking, which led to corruption, which then led to Members of Congress going to jail," said McCain, who is seeking the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. Wondering which states the CAGW determined to have the highest amount of pork per capita? Alaska and Hawaii. -- CNN Political Reseacher Xuan Thai
