The Tom Cruise political curse?

Two people Cruise has based characters on have become associated with Washington scandals.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A warning to any real person mega star Tom Cruise may be depicting in a big screen box office smash: You may get caught up in a Washington corruption case.

Cruise's character in "Top Gun" -- Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell -- was based on former Rep. Duke Cunningham, R-San Diego, who is now in jail after pleading guilty to bribery charges.

And Cruise's character in "A Few Good Men," Lt. Daniel Kaffee, was based on New Mexico's fired federal prosecutor David Iglesias. Iglesias was one of eight U.S. attorneys recently dismissed by the Bush administration.

He testified before Congress Tuesday that he was fired for not prosecuting Democrats in corruption cases.

According to, Cruise is slated to play a Member of Congress in "Lions for Lambs" that also will star Robert Redford and Meryl Streep.
