Poll: Most Americans do not believe the United States can win in Iraq

U.S. soldiers approach a suspect house Monday just outside Muqdadiyah, Iraq, north of Baghdad.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- For the first time since the U.S. war in Iraq began four years ago, more than half of Americans (54 percent) do not believe the United States can win, a CNN poll said Tuesday. Just 37 percent think the United States will win, and an all-time low of 29 percent say things are going well there,

In addition, more than half of Americans (54 percent) say the Bush administration was deliberately misleading on whether Iraq had weapons of mass destruction prior to the U.S.-led invasion.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. telephone poll of 1,027 adults was carried out Friday through Sunday. It has a sampling error of plus or minus 3 points.

Asked if they think it is good or bad for the country that the Democratic Party controls Congress, 59 percent said it is good, down from the 67 percent who expressed that sentiment in November, but about the same as the 58 percent who said they felt that way in January.

Less than half (47 percent) said they approve of what the Democratic leaders have done so far this year. That jibed with their evaluation of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, with 46 percent saying they approve of the way she is handling her job, down from 51 percent in January.

Still, more than half of respondents (51 percent) said they had afavorable opinion of the Democratic Party, which exceeds the 42 percent who said they felt that way about the Republican Party.

The questions about the political parties were asked of a half-sample and had a sampling error of plus-or-minus 4.5 points.
