Man apprehended after climbing White House fence
WASHINGTON (AP) -- An unidentified man with a package scaled a White House fence Friday, prompting a security lock down on the White House compound, the Secret Service said.
The man climbed over the fence on the northeast side of the White House grounds shortly after 11 a.m. ET and was taken into custody, Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said. The Secret Service said security personnel were working to determine the contents of the package. Nearly three hours after the incident, the White House gates remained closed, and a building housing the White House press corps off Lafayette Square was locked down. Members of the media and White House staffers, who also have offices there, were not allowed to leave the building. The regular White House briefing was delayed until the area could be secured. |
