Frist tout's Thompson's potential presidential run

Frist encouraged former Sen. Thompson Monday to jump into the presidential race.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- "Law and Order" actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson's potential White House bid has excited a lot of Republicans, including former Senate majority leader and fellow Tennessean Bill Frist.

In a letter to supporters of his political action committee Monday night, Frist praises Thompson's record as a senator and declares the current actor to be a "commonsense leader."

"Fred understands real people and they understand him," Frist wrote to VOLPAC supporters. "He understands the legislative process and has a strong bipartisan appeal, though he is a real conservative."

Frist, who ruled out his own presidential bid last November right before retiring from the Senate, served with Thompson in the chamber for eight years.
