Clinton starts online petition calling for Gonzales to resign

Clinton says Gonzales should resign.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- New York Sen. Hillary Clinton became the latest Democrat to call for Alberto Gonzales to step down Wednesday, saying he "fired federal prosecutors for political reasons and denied it," in an email sent to supporters of her presidential campaign.

Clinton is also calling on her supporters to sign an online petition calling for Gonzales to resign.

"He is at the center of a widening scandal over the firing of several U.S. attorneys -- firings we now know to be political," Clinton wrote. "These attacks on the impartiality of the federal government's prosecutors are a genuine threat to the foundations of our justice system."

One of Clinton's chief rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, former Sen. John Edwards, said Tuesday that "Gonzales ought to be gone."
