Bush calls Gonzales to reaffirm support after thousands of pages

President Bush called Gonzales Tuesday Morning to reaffirm his support.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush called his embattled attorney general Tuesday morning to reassure him of his support after thousands of pages of internal Justice Department documents were sent to Congress Monday night that shed new light on the controversy surrounding the firings of several U.S. attorneys.

White House press secretary Tony Snow said the president called Alberto Gonzales from the Oval Office around 7:15 a.m to "reaffirm his strong backing" of the attorney general.

Gonzales has come under fire for how the firings of at least seven U.S. attorneys were carried out, and some have called for his resignation.

The White House has steadfastly maintained that the president has full confidence in Gonzales.
