Gates: U.S. 'not planning for a war with Iran'
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Friday reiterated that the United States is "not planning for a war with Iran," while adding that American forces are dealing with Iranian-linked explosives in Iraq.
Speaking at a press conference with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Peter Pace, Gates said he is reinforcing what President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have said. Gates said U.S. forces are "trying to counter" what Iranians are doing to U.S. soldiers in Iraq. He referred to "explosively formed projectiles" with roots in Iran killing troops, and to getting Iranians to stop nuclear enrichment, a process being pursued through diplomatic efforts. |
