Bush announces extension of tour in Afghanistan for some U.S. troops
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush announced Thursday that he will extend the stay of 3,200 U.S. troops in Afghanistan by four months and will deploy a replacement force to sustain that increase for an undetermined time.
His announcement came as attacks by the Taliban increased in Afghanistan. The extension of duty for the 3rd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division was previously announced by the Pentagon Jan. 24. And Wednesday, the Pentagon said some 3,200 soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade base in Vicenza, Italy, will deploy to eastern Afghanistan along the Pakistan border. The 173rd had been slated to go into Iraq, Pentagon officials said. Other forces will take their place there, they said. -- CNN White House Correspondent Ed Henry |
