Senate panel passes anti-Iraq resolution
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a resolution Wednesday that condemns President Bush's plan to increase the number of American troops in Iraq, saying it is "not in the national interest of the United States."
The resolution, sponsored by Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden, D-Delaware, Foreign Relations Committee member Chuck Hagel, R-Nebraska, and Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Michigan, passed by a 12-9 vote. The word "escalation" -- originally in the resolution and criticized by some Republicans for being a partisan term -- was changed to "increase." Hagel, who made strong statements in support of the resolution earlier Wednesday, was the only Republican to vote for it. All eleven committee Democrats supported the measure. The resolution, now headed to the Senate floor, faces competition from another bipartisan resolution against the troop increase. That measure is sponsored by Sens. John Warner, R-Virginia, Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Ben Nelson, D-Nebraska. -- CNN Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash
