Sen. Voinovich skeptical about troop increases
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Wednesday he was "skeptical" that President Bush's proposed increase of 20,000 troops in Iraq would end the sectarian violence that is creating the instability in that country or that Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki would come through with his end of the bargain.
"My faith in Prime Minister al-Maliki's political will to make the hard choices necessary to bring about a political solution is fragile at best. What we need first is a political solution between Sunni Arabs and Shia militias that are adding to the violence," Voinovich said in a statement. "I want real evidence that a potential surge in troops will do more good than harm and will not exacerbate the existing violence in Iraq." -- CNN.com Senior Political Producer Scott Anderson
