Sen. Clinton heads to Iraq, Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As the Senate Armed Services Committee opened a hearing on President Bush's new policy in Iraq Friday, two of its members were noticeably missing.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York, and Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Indiana are headed to Iraq and Afghanistan, part of a four day trip in which the senators are set to discuss President Bush's new way forward in the war-torn country with Iraqi and American leaders in the region. House Armed Service member Rep. John McHugh, R-New York, is also part of the congressional delegation. Clinton says she looks forward to hearing "from our commanders on the ground a frank assessment of our missions in those countries," in a statement released Friday morning Clinton, considered a likely candidate for the 2008 Democratic nomination for president, has expressed her opposition to the president's plan. "The president has not offered a new direction, instead he will continue to take us down the wrong road -- only faster," she said in a statement released shortly after the president's speech Wednesday night. The three lawmakers will hold a press conference to detail their trip when they are back in Washington next Tuesday. -- CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney |
