Internet widely used for 2006 election news
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A new study released today by the Pew Research Center found the number of Americans who used the Internet as their main source of news and information for the 2006 midterm elections more than doubled since 2002.
The Pew Internet and American Life Project found that, while television news is still king, almost a third of all Americans -- more than 60 million people -- went online to gather information and email political views during the last election cycle. Mainstream news web sites dominated the places these "campaign Internet users" went for information, but other sources were increasingly thrown into the mix. Twenty percent of these Internet users said they looked to blogs for news -- particularly Internet users with high income and education levels. Almost as many people cited news satire web sites like The Onion as sources for political information. Pew also called the 2006 campaign season a "breakthrough moment" for online video and politics. Citing videos like that of Senator Conrad Burns falling asleep during a farm bill hearing and Senator George Allen's so-called "Macaca moment," the study found that 13% of all Americans - roughly 25 million people -- watched political videos online last cycle.
