Cheney rebuffs Congress, vows to 'move forward' regardless
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Calling a pending resolution opposing the U.S. troop surge in Iraq "detrimental" and futile, Vice President Dick Cheney told CNN "we are moving forward" regardless of what Congress does.
In an interview to be aired in full this afternoon on the "Situation Room," Cheney ceded that legislators could slash funding for the war and insisted that the Bush administration has "consulted extensively" with Congress. "But in terms of this effort, the president has made his decision," he said. "The fact of the matter is, we need to get the job done. "I think [the nominated senior U.S. commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. David] Petraeus can do it, I think our troops can do it. And I think it's far too soon for the talking heads on television to conclude that it's impossible to do, it's not going to work, it can't possibly succeed." |
