Florida Gov. Bush halts executions after botched lethal injection
(CNN) -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush suspended all executions indefinitely Friday, after a medical examiner said state officials botched the lethal injection of convicted killer Nieves Diaz such that his 34-minute execution took twice as long as normal.
As part of an executive order, Bush created an 11-member Commission on Administration of Lethal Injection to assess the policies and actions employed by members of the state's Department of Corrections. Appointments will be made by the governor, Attorney General, Senate President, Speaker of the House and Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. "I look forward to the Commission's expeditious review of the lethal injection protocols in Florida to ensure the method is consistent with the Eighth Amendment of the United States," Bush said in a statement. In a related story, a federal judge in California who ordered a moratorium on that state's executions declared its lethal injection protocols unconstitutional Friday. |
