Dems delay deciding on convention location
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean will putt off deciding where the 2008 Democratic National Convention will be held until after the New Year, a DNC spokesman told CNN Tuesday.
Denver and New York are vying for the top honor. The Mile High City has not held a presidential convention since 1908, the year the Democrats nominated William Jennings Bryan. New York last held a presidential convention in 2004, when the GOP re-nominated President Bush. "Chairman Dean is going to make the best decision for the party based on the merits of each city's bid," DNC spokesman Dag Vega said. "We are fortunate to have two great bids from two great American cities. Because of the holiday week and at the request of both cities, we will announce the convention city in early January." While DNC officials had indicated they expected a final decision to come this week, a DNC source tells CNN party leaders are working through all the fine points of the bids and contracts before they make a decision. "That just needs a couple of extra weeks," the official said. While Denver has made an enthusiastic bid to host the convention, some Democratic officials are concerned the city will not be able to raise the estimated $55 Million needed to put on the event. There is also concern Denver does not have a sufficient amount of hotel rooms. -- CNN Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash
