Vilsack to run for president
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack will seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency, a senior political advisor confirms to CNN.
The retiring governor will file a statement of candidacy Thursday with the Federal Election Commission, skipping over the interim step of forming an exploratory committee to consider whether to run for the White House. He is the first major candidate to declare his intention to run for president. "He has made his decision and there was no point in waiting," said a Vilsack advisor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "He wants to get started talking about his vision for the future of the country." Vilsack bio -- CNN Political Editor Mark Preston
