Bush: Time to show 'we can work together'
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, who will become Majority Leader when the new Congress begins in January, said Friday that they are ready to cooperate with each other, the latest sign the caustic language of the 2006 campaign has given way to a Washington honeymoon.
"My attitude about this is that there is a great opportunity for us to show the country that Republicans and Democrats are equally as patriotic and equally concerned about the future and that we can work together," Bush told reporters in the oval office with Reid and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, by his side. "The election's over, the only way to move forward is with bipartisanship and openness and to get some results," Reid added. "And we've made a commitment, the four of us here today, that's what we're going to do." Bush's meeting with the Senate Democratic leaders came one day after he met House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland -- the presumed leaders of the House when Democrats take control in January. -- CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
