Rep. Capito: I didn't know about e-mails
By CNN.com Senior Political Producer Scott Anderson
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, one of three members of the House who sit on the House Page Board, says she was unaware of the e-mail exchanges between Rep. Foley and teenage pages until media reports last week forced the Florida Republican to resign last week, according to the West Virginia Gazette. Capito, a Republican from West Virginia, said the chairman of the page board, Rep. Rep. John Shimkus, R-Illinois, did not tell her or the board's other member, Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Michigan, until last Friday. Shimkus became aware of the e-mail last fall. Capito said she would have been immediately concerned if she had read the e-mail. "I don't think it would pass the sniff test," she told the West Virginia Gazette. "Even asking those questions --— that is not normal between a 52-year-old adult and a 16-year-old. It's not like they're family friends or anything. I think it would raise some serious questions. But I wasn't given that opportunity." |
