New Jersey GOP candidate calls for Hastert's resignation
From CNN Congressional Producer Ted Barrett
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- New Jersey Republican Senate candidate Tom Kean Jr. said House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, should resign over the Foley scandal. "He is the head of the institution, and this happened on his watch," Kean's spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said. "The culture of 'protecting each other' has eroded Congress and the public's faith in government," she said in reference to charges House Republican leaders didn't respond quickly enough to stop former Rep. Mark Foley's improper interaction with teen-aged pages. Kean also thinks House leaders should appoint an outside panel to review the matter, Hazelbaker said. Kean trails Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez by three points among likely voters in the latest USA Today/Gallup poll. Menendez's lead is within the poll's margin of error. |
