Top House Democrats call for hearings
From CNN's Andrea Koppel

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, and several other Democratic leaders are calling on House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, to hold hearings on the classified National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), parts of which were leaked to the New York Times and other media organizations over the weekend.

The media reports say the NIE report concludes that the Iraq war has increased the terrorist threat, though top Republicans argue conclusions shouldn't be drawn until the document is declassified.

"Our role as a co-equal branch of government is to provide aggressive and independent oversight," Pelosi and several other Democrats wrote in the letter to Hastert. "We therefore call on you to direct the committees of jurisdiction to hold immediate oversight hearings this week and next on the new National Intelligence Estimate and its ramifications for U.S. policy."

Ron Bonjean, Hastert's spokesman, dismissed the Democratic request.

"Democrats calling for terrorism hearings will only lead America to conclude that Democrats have not done enough to help Republicans fight terrorism," Bonjean told CNN.
