Rockefeller asks Negroponte to declassify NIE report
From CNN's Andrea Koppel and Ted Barrett

WASHINGTON (CNN)--West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, called on Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte today to declassify the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) to the "fullest extent possible," after portions of it were leaked to the New York Times and other news organizations.

"Declassifying and releasing the full range of conclusions in the NIE will not only provide a complete picture of the Intelligence Community's assessment but also will contribute greatly to the public debate and discussion about counterterrorism policies," Rockefeller wrote in a letter to Negroponte obtained by CNN.

This comes as Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, also called on the Bush administration to declassify the report.

"I think the Administration should declassify this document so the American people can see the material for themselves and come to their own conclusions," Roberts said in a statement.
