SEWARD, Alaska (CNN) -- The billion-dollar settlement made by
Exxon after its 1989 Alaskan oil spill is being used to clean
and protect the environment.
Some $400 million has been used for habitat protection --
keeping lands off limits to commercial developers. And much
of it has been spent to buy parcels of land, such as the $15
million spent to preserve open space in Kenai Fjords National
Park.
