(CNN) -- Earth Day celebrants around the world are coordinating many of their activities this year via the Internet, which is fast becoming a global greenhouse of environmental awareness.
Web users can find Interactive chats, downloadable recycle kits, and ideas for communities to organize environmental activities like beach cleanups, recycling movements and water conservation campaigns.
One of the most comprehensive sites on the Web detailing Earth Day activities is Earthday.org. If offers a state-by-state listing of April 22 activities, along with local links and phone numbers, as a resource for organizing community events. This site also includes references to international activities and an extensive related sites index.
A grass roots effort to "pull the plug" on energy consumption is hosting Earth Day Energy Fast, urging consumers to live without manmade power for 24 hours.
Local community sites are cropping up on the Net specifically targeted for Earth Day '99. New York City Earth Day Online includes a detailed list of the big city's planned activities as well as a
state-by-state reference list. Local D.C. Bike-in day offers information on that city's Earth Day-event to promote clean transportation.
Focusing on environmental awareness in April, New England Earth Day features local calenders listing "fun things to do" around New England.
The well-organized Earth Day Canada homepage allows users to register and search Earth Day events anywhere in Canada. Posting back issues of an environmental guide called "Solutions Newsletter," this site details related programs and resources around Canada.
For those who wish to participate in Earth Day activities online, the Internet offers several ways to get involved directly from your keyboard.
Creativity Net hosts a "KidCast for Peace" for Earth Day 1999. Oriented to allow children from all over the world to meet in video conferences, this site helps share ideas from a children's perspective about how to make the world a better place.
A place for Web savvy environmentalists to meet online, Ecomall Earth Day Chat not only hosts chats about Earth Day activities every Sunday but also introduces different environmental topics every day of the week.
The site for Planetpals, a comic strip that teaches children about environment awareness, offers several free downloadable items such as: a recycle kit, a sticker collection, coloring books, card games and craft. Happy Earth Day email cards are also available.
As more U.S. schools gain Internet access, organizations are tailoring Web sites specifically for teacher-student activities.
The National PTA Earth Week 1999 special section hosts a student awareness earth week from April 18 to 24. Students can download activity booklets while learning about clean air, water and land.

An organization called the Earth Day Groceries Project promotes a nationwide campaign to unite school children with local grocery stores. Children decorate grocery bags that will later be passed out at local stores in hopes of increasing environmental awareness about Earth Day. Information about how to participate and instructions for the classroom are posted at the site.
The Environmental Protection Agency offers a downloadable Earth Day coloring book along with links to several useful environmental resources.
The Wilderness Society hosts an Earth Day section posting a message from Earth Day founder John McConnell and an environmental timeline.
