Dr. Gupta, I was wathing this morning about the lady that had gastric bypass and stated that she had to re-assure herself that she was still not obese.
I had Ruen y Gastric Bypass in 2004 lost 160 lbs. even though I went from a size 52 waist to a 36 and 3xl shirt to large shirt, my mind still sees myself as still needing to slim down, it is weird, I know that Iphysically look ok but mentally i cannot see it. The reason that I am bringing this up is that I am diagnosed as a stress eater and when I see mysel I stress and want to eat, a vicious circle. One thing that my doctor told me before I had the surgery was "I am doing surgery on your stomach, not your brain. The surgery is a tool, your success depends on how you use the tool". Iremember this daily to keep me from overeating and getting back to where I started, which by the way is the biggest stress of all, it is also a motivational point. I am sorry for th long blog, but I feel that it is very important to people that have had this surgery, to understand those fine words that my doctor said to me....Thanks for listening...Rick
Dear Dr Gupta, Thanks for your story on the hospital situation in New Orleans. You should also point out that the doctors in East Jeff Hospital have rendered over 100 million dollars in services for which they are entitled to reimbursement by the state of Louisiana, and the state has steadfastly refused to pay up. The state realizes that the docs will go broke if they are not reimbursed, but seems to be pleased to exploit the fact that they are bound by the Hippocratic oath to help the impoverished patients. A suit is now pending against the state and it is using all manner of technical devices to have the suit thrown out of court. I now live in Boston, but am a N O resident as well,(my whole family is there ) and I believe that the state legislature has been looking for any way it can to keep N O from recovering. See Ms Whitfield's companion story today about the Road Home program seeking reimbursements from the Katrina victims in New Orleans. One day perhaps some one will discover how the ICF company got 750 million dollars to operate this disastrous program to the detriment of the local residents.Helen Herman
