HONOLULU (CNN) -- Using video technology, a surgeon in Honolulu was scheduled Thursday to assist another doctor several islands away in operating on a girl's eye.
A doctor at the North Hawaii Community Hospital will remove an eye tumor from a 16-year-old while consulting with a doctor at Saint Francis Medical Center on the island of Oahu.
The doctors said this is the first eye surgery to be perform using the telemedicine technology.
If the procedure becomes widely implemented, they said, it could bring better health care to rural areas and remote Pacific Islands.
