(CNN) -- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35 percent of all American adults are overweight. And as Mom and Dad get fatter, so do the children. Two new studies provide insight into the rise in childhood weight gain. A study in the journal Pediatrics found feeding an infant solid food before 6 months of age does not contribute to weight gain as some experts had feared. However, numbers say childhood obesity is still a serious problem. About 8 percent of all preschool-age children are overweight, and nearly double that are overweight between age 6 and 11. This latest research underscores the need for parents to become involved in their children's eating behaviors, physical activity and general weight control.
