From San Francisco Bureau Chief Greg Lefevre
(CNN) -- Kaiser Permanente helped paved the way for health maintenance organizations in the United States. Founded as a medical care program for Kaiser shipyard workers in the San Francisco Bay Area, it now provides health care for more than 9 million customers. Sheryl and Terry Bisbane say they like their Kaiser health plan just fine. "I haven't come across any of those horror stories for ourselves," Sheryl said. "We've been pleased with the type of care that we've received."
