WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The maker of a popular nutritional drink has agreed to stop making product claims the Federal Trade Commission charged were false and unsubstantiated.
The FTC on Thursday announced the agreement with Abbott Laboratories, maker of Ensure. The commission had charged that Abbott wrongly claimed in both print and TV ads that many doctors recommended Ensure to supplement and replace meals for healthy adults. It also said that Abbott made false representations about the amount of vitamins in one serving of Ensure.
Under the agreement Abbott does not admit any violation of law. But it has agreed to stop making claims about doctor recommendations of Ensure for healthy adults or "misrepresenting that one serving of any Ensure product" has as many vitamins as typical vitamin supplements.
"Abbott went too far," Jodie Bernstein, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement. "Before consumers spend their money on such products as a regular supplement to their diet, they should check with a doctor or nutritionist."
