RARITAN, New Jersey (CNN) -- The Food and Drug Administration has given the green light for a drug company to market its birth control pill as an effective treatment for acne in women seeking contraception.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen, manufactured by Ortho Pharmaceutical Corp., is the first low-dose birth control pill cleared for marketing for a noncontraceptive indication.
Acne is often experienced by women in their 20s and 30s and is believed to be caused by a variety of factors including hormones, stress and heredity. Research has shown that Ortho Tri-Cyclen lowers the level of hormones that are thought to trigger the onset of acne.
