Summary of youth risk survey

(CNN) -- Below is a summary of the CDC's 1995 youth risk survey of 10,904 U.S. high school students:

Behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries, according to poll results:

  • 21.7 percent rarely or never used safety belts when riding
  • in a car.
  • 92.8 percent rarely or never wore a bicycle helmet.
  • During the month before the survey, 38.8 percent rode with
  • a driver who had been drinking alcohol.
  • 20 percent carried a weapon during the past month.
  • 38.7 percent were in a physical fight during the past
  • year.
  • 8.7 percent attempted suicide during the past year.

Sexual behaviors:

  • 53.1 percent had had sexual intercourse.
  • 17.8 percent had had sexual intercourse with four or more
  • partners.
  • 37.9 percent had had sexual intercourse during the past
  • three months.
  • Only 54.4 percent who were sexually active used a condom
  • during their last sexual intercourse.
  • 17.4 percent who were sexually active used birth control
  • pills during their last sexual intercourse.

Tobacco use:

  • 34.8 percent smoked cigarettes during the past month.
  • 16.1 percent smoked cigarettes on 20 or more days during
  • the past month.
  • 11.4 percent used smokeless tobacco during the past month.

Alcohol and other drug use:

  • 51.6 percent had had at least one drink of alcohol during
  • the past month.
  • 32.6 percent had five or more drinks of alcohol on at
  • least one occasion during the last month.
  • 25.3 percent used marijuana during the past month.
  • 3.1 percent used cocaine during the past month.
  • 20.3 percent had used inhalants during their lifetime.

Dietary Behavior:

  • 27.7 percent ate five or more servings of fruits and
  • vegetables during the previous day.
  • 60.5 percent ate two or fewer servings of foods typically
  • high in fat content during the previous day.
  • 27.6 percent thought they were overweight.
  • 4.8 percent had taken laxatives or vomited to lose weight
  • during the past month.
  • 5.2 percent had used diet pills to lose weight during the
  • past month.

Physical activity:

  • 63.7 percent did vigorous physical activity three or more
  • days during the past week.
  • 21.1 percent did moderate physical activity five or more
  • days during the past week.
  • 59.6 percent were enrolled in physical education class.
  • 25.4 percent attended physical education class daily.
