NIH gives credence to alternative medicine
From Correspondent Rhonda Rowland
(CNN) -- A number of behavioral and relaxation techniques can
relieve chronic pain and insomnia, according to a panel of
experts from the National Institutes of Health.
The results are best when the therapy is combined with
conventional medicine such as drugs or surgery, the NIH panel
said in an article published in this week's Journal of the
American Medical Association.
Experts say, though, there are barriers to alternative
medicine. One is the unwillingness on the part of some
insurance companies to pay for the treatments. Some doctors,
too, continue to oppose alternative therapy.
