WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Food and Drug Administration has approved an anti-tumor drug for ovarian cancer patients who have not progressed following initial chemotherapy treatments.

The drug, Hycamtin (topotecan), was approved in just over five months after it was submitted to the FDA.

Topotecan is a member of a new class of drugs that work by inhibiting enzymes. Results of clinical trials showed that the drug reduced tumor size in 17 percent of 337 patients.

An estimated 26,700 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed this year in the United States, according to American Cancer Society figures. There will be an estimated 14,800 deaths this year from the disease.
