Rosetta Stone

In 1799, Napoleon's troops found a stone covered with the same inscription in three languages, including Greek and Egyptian. The discovery led to the deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphics (Greek for sacred writing). Scholars were able to figure out that some hieroglyphics are pictures of words. Others are signs for different sounds.
