Hot dogs produced in Georgia recalled after listeria foundNovember 17, 1999
CHICAGO (Reuters) -- About 1,500 pounds of hot dogs produced by Robbins Packing Company of Statesboro, Georgia, were voluntarily recalled by the company for possible contamination by listeria, a deadly bacteria, the company and Georgia state officials said on Wednesday. No illnesses have been reported, they said. The hot dogs were distributed to supermarkets in eastern Georgia and in western South Carolina around the community of Aiken, said the Georgia Department of Agriculture in a statement. The listeria was found during routine sampling by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The U.S. Agriculture Department was searching for the origin of the contamination, the state said. Listeria can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, a stiff neck and nausea. The disease can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems such as infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease. All 12-oz. packages of Robbins Franks with the sell-by date of December 28, with lot code 1020 and EST 7932 inside the USDA seal of inspection, are being recalled.
