Letter carriers collect food, too

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Mail carriers throughout the United States will be collecting food items for seventh annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday.

Organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers, postal carriers in more than 10,000 communities will pick up nonperishable food donations as they deliver mail on their regular routes.

National food drive coordinator Drew Von Bergen recommends food donations be left in bags or boxes near mailboxes rather than in mailboxes. The food will be collected and taken to local post offices before distribution to local food banks and shelters.

Last year, the NALC drive received 62.5 million pounds of food.

Reuters contributed to this report.
