Belgian Mercedes melts in the mouth

February 12, 1999
Web posted at: 10:54 p.m. EST (0354 GMT)

BRUSSELS, Belgium (CNN) -- It may not have much power on the road, but a full-size Mercedes Class-A car, made completely of chocolate, is turning heads and tempting sweet teeth at a chocolate fair in Brussels.

The choco-car, conceived by the chocolate maker Debailleul, was made of 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of pure chocolate and 30 kilograms (66 pounds) of cocoa butter.

Head chocolate maker Marc Debailleul said his staff had a difficult time finding a suitable place to build the car.

"We couldn't do it in a warm place in order to work with the chocolate more easily," he said. "We had to do it in a garage where it was very cold, so we had some problems."

After the fair, the car will be broken up and given to children.
