Forida citrus crops escape major damage from cold, organization says

LAKELAND, Fla. (CNN) -- Florida Citrus Mutual said Wednesday that citrus growers had apparently escaped damage from temperatures that chilled the state over night.

"Temperatures in most of the citrus belt, except in low lying areas were not cold enough, long enough to cause significant damage," said Andy LaVigne, executive vice president of Citrus Mutual, the state's largest grower organization.

He said it will be several weeks before any damage can be assessed. Temperatures ranged from the mid 20s to the low 30s across the citrus belt in central Florida.

Approximately 74 percent of the season's Florida citrus crop is still on the trees.
