Giant holiday cake wraps around city blocks in Mexico CityJanuary 4, 1999Web posted at: 12:45 p.m. EST (1745 GMT) From CNN Correspondent Mary-Jo Lipman
MEXICO CITY (CNN) -- What do you get when you mix a ton of sugar, six tons of flour, 33,000 eggs, 5,500 pounds of butter, 375 gallons of milk, and vast quantities of dried fruit, yeast and salt? One giant cake. Dubbed "the rosca of the millenium," this nine-ton holiday cake stretched a mile long and took 3,000 volunteers to create. The pastry is a narrow wreath of sweet bread baked with dried fruit and traditionally eaten on January 6 -- "Three Kings' Day." Adults and children alike lined the tables that wrapped around several city blocks, waiting for the first slice to be cut. Some people came for more than a little free cake. "It gives us the opportunity to get together and stop for a moment of relaxation. And above all, there's the happiness it gives the little ones," said one participant. The president of the National Association of Bakers concocted the "giant rosca" idea, as a way to celebrate peace. He says he is convinced that where there is bread, there is no war.
