Airlines offering more wines in the skyDecember 4, 1998Web posted at: 4:13 p.m. EST (2113 GMT) From CNN's Carolyn O'Neil (CNN) -- Some airlines are making an effort to make flying a more pleasurable experience for travelers who love wines. On some international flights, first and business class travelers may find offerings of chardonnay, pinot noir or even French champagne. "Airline studies have shown that frequent flyers are often frequent wine drinkers," said Lori Lincoln, the senior editor of Business Traveler International magazine. Lincoln's publication hosts an annual "Cellars in the Sky" contest to rate the wines offered in business class. "We ask (the airlines) to submit two red wines and two white wines and a sparkling wine and we have some of the top judges in the New York area come and do a blind tasting," she explained. AOM French Airlines tops this year's "Cellars in the Sky" list for best overall wine selection. Following AOM were: Air New Zealand, KLM, American Airlines and Lan Chile. As for U.S. carriers, many are already investing in stronger wine offerings. Delta's wine program, called "Vinum," got great reviews from Forbes magazine. Meanwhile, if you are seated in a coach seat and wonder when an actual wine list might replace the customary screw-top bottle, know that your concerns are already under consideration. Many airlines say they are working to upgrade the wines offered in coach.
