Black American history must be considered against the backdrop of slavery, the institution that brought so many Africans to the United States against their wills.

Many African-Americans who have made major historical contributions were slaves or the descendants of slaves.

Slavery persisted in the Americas for almost 250 years, and was not fully eradicated in the United States until the adoption of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1865.
