Since Mormon leader Brigham Young led his followers to their new desert home in 1847, the church has dominated both politics and daily life. In 1991, Utah passed the strictest abortion law in the country, permitting the procedure only in cases of rape or incest or if the mother's life is endangered. Former Republican Sen. Jake Garn of Utah is the only senator to have flown on a space shuttle. Democrats lost their Utah toehold in 1996 with Rep. Bill Orton's defeat by Christopher Cannon. Consequently, Utah's entire congressional delegation is Republican. Republican Sen. Bob Bennett, the son of former four-term Sen. Wallace Bennett, is running for his second six-year, and reportedly last, term. back to top RELATED SITESNOTE: External sites will open in a new browser window. Government:Utah Lt.
